What stone and paving cleaning covers
Stone and paving cleaning removes moss, algae, lichen, weeds and ingrained dirt from patios, driveways, paths, steps, garden walls and stone plinths. The aim is a clean, even surface that is safe to walk on again, without attacking the stone itself.
Safety matters as much as appearance: green films make paving slippery when wet, especially on shaded paths and patios. In the damp coastal climate of the Baltic region, growth settles quickly on horizontal surfaces.
Different stones, different methods
Stone is not just stone. Hardness, porosity and sensitivity to cleaning agents vary considerably:
Every job therefore starts with identifying the material and cleaning a test area in an inconspicuous spot. On paving we first remove weeds and compacted dirt from the joints, then clean the surface with pressure, distance and direction chosen so that as little joint material as possible is washed out. Joints can be refilled afterwards on request once the area has dried.
Why not simply use more pressure? Because damage to a stone surface cannot be undone. A roughened stone has more pores, absorbs more water and gets dirty faster than before.
- Granite and other hard stones: robust and able to take firmer cleaning
- Sandstone: soft and porous – low pressure only, or the surface roughens
- Limestone and marble: sensitive to acidic cleaners
- Concrete paving and slabs: the thin coloured top layer must not be worn away
- Clay brick paving: hard and dense, but the joints need care
Sealing and impregnation after cleaning
Freshly cleaned stone has open pores and absorbs water and dirt easily. A sealing treatment – technically an impregnation – penetrates the pores without forming a film. Water beads off, dirt soaks in less readily and new growth takes longer, while the stone can still release moisture.
Sealing is often worthwhile on porous concrete paving, patio slabs and soft natural stone outdoors. On dense clay brick or granite it usually adds little. A true film-forming seal is different: it can change the look of the stone and how slippery it is, so we discuss the options with you first.
What cleaning can and cannot achieve
Organic growth such as algae, moss and lichen can usually be removed well. Not every stain disappears completely, though: deep-seated rust, oil or leaf stains often become paler but may remain visible. We tell you honestly after the test area.
Cleaning makes paving clean, not new. Sunken or loose stones, root damage and frost heave need to be relaid by a paving or landscaping company. White efflorescence on walls comes from salts in mortar or masonry and returns as long as moisture carries them to the surface.
To keep the result for longer, sweep regularly, do not leave leaves lying and pull up weeds early. For properties in Sweden and Denmark, it often makes sense to combine stone and paving cleaning with roof or facade work in one planned assignment.
What you gain
- Moss, algae, weeds and ingrained dirt removed from stone and paving
- Less risk of slipping on green, wet surfaces
- Method and pressure matched to the stone, tested on a small area first
- Joints treated with care and refilled on request
- Optional sealing so water and dirt soak in less quickly
How the job runs
- 1
Photos and material check
From photos – and on site where needed – we identify the stone type, the joints and the kind of soiling, then send a written quote.
- 2
Test area
A small inconspicuous area is cleaned first so you can see the result before the whole surface is done.
- 3
Joint and surface cleaning
Weeds and dirt are removed from the joints, then the surface is cleaned with pressure suited to the stone – low pressure for soft stone.
- 4
Joints and sealing (optional)
Once dry, joints can be refilled and porous surfaces sealed to repel water and dirt.
Frequently asked questions
Can sandstone be cleaned?
Yes, but only very gently. Because sandstone is soft and porous, we work with low pressure and a suitable method and test the effect on an inconspicuous spot first. Too much pressure would roughen the surface and make the stone more vulnerable to new dirt and moisture, so patience is more important here than power.
Will cleaning wash the sand out of my paving joints?
Some joint material is lost in any thorough cleaning, and a great deal if it is done carelessly. We choose pressure, distance and direction to protect the joints as far as possible. On request we refill the joints once the surface has dried, so the stones sit firmly again and weeds find less space.
Should paving or stone be sealed after cleaning?
Often yes for porous concrete paving, patio slabs and soft natural stone; usually not for dense clay brick or granite. Sealing in this sense is an impregnation: it makes water bead off and slows dirt and regrowth without forming a film. The surface must be clean and dry before it is applied, and we check suitability first.
Will my stone look like new after cleaning?
Not always, but usually much better. Algae, moss and dirt crusts can generally be removed well. Deep rust, oil or leaf stains often only fade, and old stone keeps its natural weathering. The test area shows what is realistically achievable before the whole surface is cleaned, so you know what to expect.
Do you clean patios and paving in Sweden and Denmark?
Yes, as part of a planned assignment – ideally combined with roof or facade work on the same property. Because our team travels from Rostock by ferry, it makes most sense to carry out several jobs in one assignment. Send us photos of the area and its location, and we will tell you whether it can be included and what it involves.
